1st off, as always, you are a free agent in your spiritual & magickal life path. always in all ways. Use all advice with discernment and follow your own internal guidance. And then journal your results.

Eclipse season is here, and I keep seeing people treat eclipse water like it’s just moon water with extra vibes.

There are two kinds of Eclipse Waters, and they do very different things.

  • Regular moon water is a gentle little ritual.
  • Eclipse water is a whole portal.

Let’s explore the differences.

This happens when the Earth casts its shadow over the Moon during a full moon. The Moon is your emotions, your subconscious, all the things you’re quietly carrying, and it goes dark for a bit.

This is release energy. Ending energy. Shadow work energy.

What it’s actually good for:

  • Cord-releasing (aka cutting) and banishing rituals
  • Shadow work baths (the deep, unpretty emotionally excavation kind)
  • Rinsing your hands after you journal through something hard
  • Anointing your protection or banishing tools
  • Watering plants you’re pruning back
  • Cleansing doorways, windows, your altar; anywhere you want a clean slate

What it’s not for: drinking, blessing new projects, manifesting abundance, or anything you’re trying to grow. This water dissolves. That’s its whole job.

This one happens when the Moon slides between us and the Sun during a new moon. The Sun- your identity, your purpose, your life force- goes dark instead.

This is reset energy. Rebirth energy. Fated-beginning, “the universe just handed you a plot twist” energy.

What it’s actually good for:

  • Marking a real, capital-B Beginning; new business, big move, identity shift
  • Stepping into a role you’ve genuinely never held before
  • Sealing a vow or a commitment to a new path
  • Planting seeds, literal or metaphorical, for something long-term
  • Crossing into territory you can’t fully see yet

What it’s not for:

  • casual manifesting
  • wishing on it like it’s a genie in a bottle
  • anything you want to unfold slow and soft

Solar eclipses don’t ASK — they MOVE you. They move fast and hit hard.

  • If you want gentle, use regular moon water instead.

Do:

  1. Treat it ceremonially. Not like an everyday-use kind of water.
  2. Say your intention out loud when you make it. Tell the water what it’s for.
  3. Store it in dark glass; amber, cobalt, violet. Keep it out of the light. Never store in plastic.
  4. Label it with the date and the eclipse
  5. Use it within about 6 months, ideally. Eclipses come in pairs roughly every half year, and the water’s potency rides that window.
  6. Build it into an actual ritual — bath, anointing, threshold blessing. Use with purpose and reverence.

Don’t:

  1. Drink it. External use only; this energy is too volatile to ingest.
  2. Use it for small stuff. This isn’t “moon water lite.” Save it for when something real is shifting.
  3. Hand it to someone without explaining what it is. Nobody should get surprise-intensity in a mason jar.
  4. Use it on kids or pets. Their energy is more sensitive; this is adult transformation work.
  5. Mix your lunar and solar batches. They’re pulling in opposite directions. Keep them in separate bottles, separate rituals.
  6. Use it if you’re not actually ready for change. This water accelerates whatever it touches. If you’re fragile right now or need steadiness, grab regular moon water instead and let this pass.

  1. Grab a glass or ceramic bowl; skip plastic and metal.
  2. Fill it with spring or filtered water.
  3. Put it somewhere it can “see” the eclipse — outside is ideal, or a windowsill facing the Moon (lunar) or Sun (solar).
  4. Say your intention out loud. Something like:
    • Lunar: “This water carries release. What no longer serves me dissolves. I am freed.”
    • Solar: “This water carries initiation. A new path opens. I step through.”
  5. Let it sit through the eclipse window — at least 2-3 hours, ideally through the peak.
  6. Bring it in before dawn, or before the eclipse wraps up.
  7. Pour it into your dark glass bottle, label it, tuck it away somewhere cool and dark.

Lunar eclipse water, when you’re:

  • Ending something; a relationship, a job, a pattern, a version of yourself
  • Deep in shadow work or therapy
  • Cutting cords; energetic, emotional, ancestral, all of it
  • Clearing your space after heavy energy moved through
  • Closing out a chapter

Solar eclipse water, when you’re:

  • Starting something major; new business, new city, new identity
  • Stepping into a role that’s brand new territory for you
  • Making a vow or committing to a new direction
  • Planting seeds; real dirt or metaphorical ones for something that’ll take years to bloom
  • Standing at the edge of a chapter you haven’t opened yet

This is the real difference I see that Mystics miss.

  • Regular moon magick = you’re directing the energy.
  • Eclipse magick = you’re responding to what’s being moved.
Regular Moon WaterEclipse Water
Amplifies what you already haveTransforms what you are
Gentle, safe for frequent useIntense — use sparingly
Fine to drink (clean source)External use only
Everyday magickReserved for the big stuff
You’re in the driver’s seat The eclipse is driving — you’re riding
PredictableA portal — fated, unpredictable

Eclipse water isn’t “dark” or bad; it’s just potent….spicy, so to speak.

Think of it like the difference between lighting a candle and lighting a bonfire. Both are fire, but one’s for ambiance, and one’s for actually burning something down.

  • Use eclipse water when you’re ready to burn something down and rise from the ash.
  • Use regular moon water when you’re tending the soul garden.

I hope this helps!
